LABRDOR-CARIBOU
WILDERNESS ADVENTURES
This
is a very belated note thanking you for your help and hospitality
last July - flying Herb and me in for our canoe trip, and putting
us up at your camp until we started out.
We had a super time. And I have to say Herb was a marvel. I expected,
on account of his age, that I'd have to make allowances for him,
perhaps pick up the slack now and then. But I think I slowed him
down more than he did me. I'd like to hope to be as fit at 72
as he is now. But I can't see that's in the cards: he's stronger
today than I am, and surely I'll go downhill over the next three
decades!
We
stayed at your next camp the second night after leaving. (We only
used the upstairs; the first floor was boarded up.) We stopped
there at noon on a very windy, cold, rainy day, and would have
been miserable tenting it in the open.
The
only problem we faced was my poor dog, Cabot. He flourished during
our first four, cold days. But then it warmed up (and by and large
stayed that way - uncomfortably hot). The bugs came out in force
and savaged him. After a day he was almost dead - unable to stand
or walk, eat or drink. Well, we got him out alive, but only by
pitching the tent for him whenever we stopped - at lunch, at most
carries, when we hiked for a view, etc. Did we get tired of this?!
I didn't get winter camping this year, although I'm planning to
go to James Bay next Christmas (a lousy time to go, but probably
the only time I can). Herb and I will both canoe this summer,
but I doubt either of us will be in Labrador. But I'll be back
before too long
I hope your year was good, and that this coming season looks promising. Please
pass my regards on to your brother, and to the folks who all were
so kind to us at Crystal Lake. And thanks again for all you did.
Pat
